The original AcuTrac product was orignially designed by Acumen Electronics in response to a comment from Carole Nash Motorcycle Insurance Brokers requesting a Tracking device for Motorcycles. "What are you doing about it?" they asked. We replied "There's no tracker out there at the moment that we would put our name to...".
So, on the long journey home from Altrincham we asked ourselves why had we said this - and decided that the "trackers" available at the time were too big, too thirsty (electrically speaking here - they would flatten a milk float in a week, never mind a motorcycle battery!), didn't work, let the rain in, vibration killed them, too expensive (with £10 fee a month that's another £120 per year...every year) and no "fun factor" at all. So we started to design a tracking device for motorcycles. Small, low current drain, vibration resistant, waterproof - all the stuff motorcyclists need. Then we found out why no-one had made one before - It was at the limit of technology at that time. GPS "engines" were very large and very thirsty. Battery life was abysmal.
But on Acumen went - and we set up AcuTrac Ltd to continue the development of the tracking device. So "Version One" came out about 18 months later in 2007 and there's many out there still working today. From that developed the "Premier" system which did a lot more - and then we realised that we were going the wrong way in development.
Customers didn't want, generally speaking, more complication - they wanted an easier system that gave them an easier life. A system with no on-going fees - but it still had to work when it was most needed - when your "asset" went missing.
So the "Locator" systems were born.
Our philosophy is good honest systems that work when wanted, and don't cost a fortune when you aren't using them!
Locator PLUS is our best selling system for motorcycles and Locator ALARM! is the best for cars and other vehicles with a separate alarm.
And Acumen? Acumen continued to manufacture motorcycle products, specilaising in motorcycle security. But not only has teh new large capacity motorcycle market been in decline - and therefore the sales of new security - but the market has changed as well. Most motorcycles now have in-built immobilisers and "traditional" motorcycle electronic security was requested less and less. Meanwhile, vehicle tracking - or theft location if you prefer - expanded. It became obvious that it was not commercially viable to keep two companies going so the decision was taken to absorb Acumen into AcuTrac.
